Right after Jesus meets the woman at the well in John 4, he asks her for a drink. She is confused. Why is he even speaking to her? Historically, Jews generally avoided associating with Samaritans; and she says as much. He replies to her in verse 10, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ …” This one little word knew is so rich. Jesus uses it here to describe a shift from ignorance to spiritual understanding; not merely knowing about God, but entering into the experiential and relational knowledge of the One who stood before her.

Today, we live on the outside of this story knowing what occurred after Jesus spoke these words. We know that this moment in time was a divine appointment for this woman. She encountered the Messiah, and we later read that many in her village believed because of her testimony and, ultimately, because they heard Jesus for themselves.

Could this be a springboard into other places in Scripture where this is explained again and in greater depth? It’s about intimacy with Christ. Maybe that idea scares you. You’re not alone. But God offers Himself as a safe place to abide. And so, like Paul says in Philippians 3:10, “that I may know him,”. This will be our goal together. Will you join me?

I know this is no small endeavor and that 14 days won’t even begin to cover it, but my hope and prayer is that this study will capture for you the awe and wonder that come along with knowing God.
