What is Bible Art Journaling?
Bible Art Journaling is a creative approach to engaging deeply with God's Word. At its heart, it is not about making beautiful artwork or decorating the pages of a Bible. It is about carefully studying Scripture, meditating on what God is teaching, and expressing those truths in a way that helps them take root in both the mind and the heart.
The artwork is not the purpose. God's Word is.
When we refer to Bible Art Journaling, we simply mean using artistic expression as one of the ways we interact with Scripture. Along with reading, observation, note-taking, prayer, and written journaling, we incorporate expressive lettering, color, stamps, paints, stickers, mixed media, and other artistic elements to create a visual reminder of what we have learned.
The goal is never to add meaning to Scripture. Rather, it is to respond creatively to the meaning that is already there.
Why Bible Art Journaling?
Christians have always sought ways to remember and meditate on God's Word. Throughout history, believers have copied Scripture by hand, filled the margins of their Bibles with notes, kept journals of what God was teaching them, and carefully preserved those reflections for years to come.
Bible Art Journaling follows that same desire. It simply adds another layer to the learning process.
It has long been recognized that we remember more when we engage with information in multiple ways. We read. We listen. We discuss. We write. Each activity reinforces what we have learned.
Bible Art Journaling builds upon those same principles.
Instead of recording only written notes, we also create a visual expression of the truths we have discovered. As we choose colors, images, words, and artistic elements that reinforce the passage, we spend more time thinking carefully about what God is saying through His Word. Later, when we see that page again, the artwork often brings back not only the passage itself but also the journey of study that led us there.
Perhaps even more importantly, Bible Art Journaling naturally encourages us to slow down.
In our monthly studies, we encourage participants to complete one day's Bible study and then spend the following day creating their journal page. Rather than rushing through lesson after lesson, this rhythm allows God's Word to settle deeply into our hearts as we reflect upon what we have learned. But everyone’s life circumstances are different, so what works well for one doesn’t fit into the schedule of another. As Lori says, there are no Bible journaling police! This is about your time in the Word.
As the psalmist writes:
"But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night." (Psalm 1:2)
Bible Art Journaling is simply one practical way many believers choose to meditate on Scripture.
Do I Need to Be Artistic?
Absolutely not. This is perhaps the greatest misconception about Bible Art Journaling. Some people are gifted artists who create breathtaking pages filled with hand lettering, watercolor, and detailed illustrations.
Most of us are not. And that is perfectly okay.
The purpose is not to impress anyone with artistic ability. The purpose is to spend meaningful time with God through His Word. One person may create an elaborate page. Another may simply stamp a title, highlight a key verse, and add a few written observations. Both have succeeded if the process has drawn them closer to Christ and helped them understand His Word more deeply.
Bible Art Journaling is for everyone.
Whether you work in the margins of a journaling Bible, create pages in a journal or notebook, or even practice on separate paper before ever putting ink on a Bible page, the important thing is not where you create. It is that you are engaging thoughtfully and prayerfully with God's Word.
