I was once going to write a study titled, Raise the Bar. The idea was simple: to show how Jesus intensifies the moral demands of the Law, moving from outward actions to the inward condition of the heart. But the more I reflected on His teaching, the more I became convinced that He was not raising the bar at all. The bar had always been set exactly where God intended it. Jesus was simply revealing where it truly stands.

In a time when many Christians are tempted to define faith by inoffensiveness, reducing righteousness to “do no harm,” we risk confusing the fruit of holiness with its root. The issue is not merely what we do, but who we are at the core. Scripture consistently presses beyond behavior into the deeper realm of desire, motive, and disposition. Anger gives rise to destruction. Lust distorts love. Pride corrupts worship. The outward act is only the visible expression of an inward reality.

Historically, the Church recognized this truth in what came to be known as the Seven Deadly Sins, not as an exhaustive list of wrong actions, but as a diagnosis of the soul’s deepest disorders. This study will explore those roots, tracing their origin and examining their place in a distinctly Christian moral vision. A vision that calls us not merely to avoid sin, but to be transformed in the heart.
