I am a people watcher. I love to sit in public spaces and just observe people! Hearing snippets of conversation gives insight into the lives of strangers and is fascinating!
The most pivotal event in history included snippets of conversation. That event was the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. At the cross were a number of people worth observing. From their recorded words we can assume that some of them “got it”: they knew what was happening; others present didn’t get it.
And one Person was there fulfilling His Father’s will and giving “His life as a ransom for many,” (Mark 10:45). It all culminated to the point when Jesus cried, “Tetelestai! It is finished!”
We can gain much from these snippets of conversation at the cross. The last words of Christ have rich meaning. But the other people at the cross … those who got it and those who didn’t … God also intends their words to bring us benefit and instruction as well.
