Road trips are always memorable. Think back on trips you have taken either as a child, or as the parent of children, or even with friends and loved ones. Most everyone can always recall one or more of these times. They make an impression on us. Sometimes, a road trip can make a dramatic impression on us. The Apostle Paul had a dramatic, life-changing experience on his road trip to Damascus.

“Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’” – Acts 9:3-4

Paul met with a dramatic, transformational moment on his road trip. To emphasize Paul’s complete and dramatic change, Luke (the author of Acts) referred to him before this moment only by his Jewish/Hebrew name (Saul) and afterwards primarily by his Hellenistic/Greek name (Paul). This is not a renaming like Abram to Abraham, but more like the difference between “Thomas” in English versus “Tomás” in Spanish or Portuguese.
